Opportunities

This page lists opportunities for volunteering or working abroad. I will update it as and when I hear of new opportunities. It would be great if others contributed to the list too. So if you know of any opportunities please comment below so I can add them.

British Council

The British Council is an international organisation that offers teaching opportunities as well as educational opportunities.

I hope to do one of their projects one day.

BUNAC

BUNAC is a company that specialises in overseas work, travel and volunteer programmes.

Through BUNAC I worked as a Camp Counsellor in a Girl Scout camp in Pennsylvania, USA. I had a fantastic time.

European Voluntary Service (EVS)

EVS is a European Commission project that allows a young person (18–30 years) to become a volunteer in another country for 2-12 months.

Through EVS I spent 6 months volunteering in a youth information centre in Austria. I had a fantastic time. You can read about my experience in my EVS blog.

Field Evaluation Programme (FEP)

FEP is run by Global Giving UK. Each year Global Giving UK sends trained volunteers abroad to conduct in-depth organisational assessments of their partners.

I have not done FEP but my friend Maryam is currently doing it. Read Maryam’s blog about her experience.

International Citizen Service (ICS)

ICS is an overseas volunteering programme funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development. Depending on your age you can be a volunteer (18-25) or a Team Leader (23-35).

Through ICS I spent 7 months in Nigeria as a Team Leader helping set up youth clubs. I had a fantastic time. You can read my blog posts on: A day in the life as an ICS Team Leader, 12 tips for being a great Team Leader, what the town I lived in was like, 9 ways to make training more fun  and 12 Nigerian foods that everyone should try.

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET)

JET is an official Japanese Government scheme that sends graduates to Japan in order to promote international understanding at grass-roots level and to improve foreign language teaching in schools.

I hope to do one of their projects one day.

Service Civil International (SCI)

SCI is a volunteer organisation dedicated to promoting a culture of peace by organising international voluntary projects for people of all ages and backgrounds.

I hope to do one of their projects one day.

World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)

WAGGGS is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world.

I was a Girl Guide from age 13 to 18. I can honestly say I would not be the person I am today, with the experiences I have, if it were not for WAGGGS. I believe every single female should join. There is no age limit. Go for it!
